London is home to some of the world’s finest museums and galleries, and the best
thing is that most of them are free! Here’s ten of the best:

The National Gallery in Trafalgar Square houses a massive collection Western European
painting from 1250 – 1900 and includes works by Boticelli, da Vinci, Rembrandt, Turner and
Van Gogh.

The National Portrait Gallery is the largest portrait gallery in the world and has works in all
mediums showing famous (and infamous!) men and women from Tudor times to the
present day.

The British Museum is often said to be the oldest museum in the world. It’s a real treasure
trove of artefacts from the 4 corners of the globe – there are over 6 million objects on show!
Some of the best bits are the Greek, Egyptian and African collections.

The Victoria & Albert Museum has the world’s best collection of decorative arts. Exhibits
dating back to 3000BC include clothing, paintings, furniture, jewellery and books.

The Science Museum is a must-see! It’s an enormous collection covering science,
technology, medicine and industry. There’s a new wing presenting all the latest ideas and
large interactive exhibitions where you can engage directly with science and technology.

The Tate Britain is home to the national collection of British painting from 1500 to the present.
It’s definitely the best collection of British art and it includes works by Turner, Constable,
Moore and Turner to name just a few.

The Imperial War Museum is the national museum of 20th Century conflict on the front line
and the home front. Its fascinating exhibits deal with conflicts from the Second World War
through the Falklands and Bosnia.

The Tate Modern is one of the biggest and best collections of modern and contemporary art
in the world. This is London’s most visited gallery and it’s housed in an old powerstation!
Artists such as Matisse, Rothko, Warhol and Emin are featured.

The Natural History Museum has literally millions of exhibits large and small on ecology and
the animal world, plus regular wildlife photography exhibitions. Highlights include the
Earthquake Experience and the Dinosaur Gallery.

The London Dungeon is not for the faint-hearted! Here, deep below the streets of London,
over 2000 years of gruesome British history comes chillingly back to life! Learn about the
Plague, the Great Fire of 1666, torture, witchcraft, Jack the Ripper.
